The club's main aim was to regain the Football League status lost in The club took on the name "Newport A. Newport Council considered the new company to be a continuation of the old, and refused it permission to use Somerton Park on the grounds of unpaid rent.
Newport won the Hellenic double , gaining promotion to the Southern League. Peter Beadle was appointed manager in October and in the —07 season Newport again reached the first round proper of the FA Cup but lost 3—1 to Swansea City with Newport's single goal coming from academy graduate Yusuf Ali.
In —07 Newport finished just one position below the playoffs after losing 2—1 to Cambridge City on the final day of the season.
In the —08 season, Newport won the last-ever FAW Premier Cup beating Llanelli 1—0 in the final , making a total of one win out of three finals.
For the second consecutive season a last-day defeat prevented County reaching the Conference South playoffs. In his first full season in charge, Holdsworth led Newport to a 10th-place finish in the league, despite a poor start.
The league title was won in March after beating Havant and Waterlooville 2—0 at Newport Stadium with seven league games remaining.

The former Corus steel Whiteheads site was speculated but this was rejected in favour of redeveloping the Llanfrechfa Grange Hospital site, near Cwmbran as a specialist and critical care unit.
The M4 relief road skirting the southern edge of the urban area of Newport is proposed as a means of reducing the congestion on the existing M4 motorway presently squeezed through the Brynglas Tunnels and making Newport and the surrounding areas more accessible.
There have also been calls for a barrage across the River Usk to be incorporated with the M4 bypass, so that the level of the river would stay permanently at high tide level, although possible plans for a Severn barrage across the River Severn would reduce the need for a River Usk barrage.
The relief road scheme was cancelled in July but relaunched in It stands on Kingsway Boulevard on the west bank of the River Usk. As a result of the removal of the Severn Bridge toll, Newport has witnessed the fastest growth in property values in the UK,  as residents in expensive areas of Bristol have shifted away from South Gloucestershire, to take advantage of the cheaper property.
