And it marked the beginning of the end for the famed mobster who spent a crime-filled life evading the law, but could not escape his own kind.
There'll be no birthday bash when the Flamingo turns 50 later this month. Any mob ties were clipped by the time billionaire Kirk Kerkorian bought the famous resort in , later selling it to hotel giant Hilton Corp.
We're talking about a robber, rapist and murderer. Those are not endearing qualities. We've made a conscious decision to distance ourselves from the Bugsy heritage.
A couple of years ago the Flamingo tore down the last vestige of the Siegel saga. Known as the "Bugsy bungalow," it was a fortified cottage with concrete walls 3 to 4 inches thick, built to soothe the nerves of an increasingly paranoid Siegel, who would spend the final months of his life looking over his shoulder.
Siegel was one of the mob's most feared tacticians, with a rap sheet ranging from drug dealing to white slavery, bookmaking to murder.
None of the charges ever stuck. In , he was sent from New York to oversee the mob's West Coast operations in Los Angeles.
He made numerous visits to Las Vegas, a remote, desert-locked gambling outpost. The suave Siegel, known for his Hollywood good looks and hair-trigger temper, dreamed of a flashy gambling oasis.
Legend has it that in early , he picked a lonely spot seven miles out in the desert from downtown Las Vegas and kicked at some dirt in a symbolic ground breaking for his fabulous Flamingo.
He found himself stretched thin overseeing West Coast rackets and Las Vegas bookmaking operations, keeping a step ahead of the law, balancing a private life that included a wife and two children in Los Angeles, and lover Virginia Hill, and nursing hemorrhaging costs at his diamond in the desert.

Themed as an island paradise and a Jimmy Buffett outpost and located on the busiest intersection of the Strip, the Flamingo is replete with entertainment, good eats and pink flamingos.
Right next to the wildlife habitat is the kind of pool you could spend the majority of your Vegas trip at as long as you don't come in winter when it's closed.

Snap a photo at Bugsy Siegel's memorial. It's located between the wildlife habitat and the pools, just outside the wedding chapel. Look for a stone pillar and bronze plaque set amid a beautiful garden.
But it wasn't quite enough to save Siegel. On June 20, relaxing in the Beverly Hills house he shared with Hill, who was away at the time, Siegel was shot to death.
A memorial plaque exists on the Flamingo site near the outdoor wedding chapel. Casino management changed the hotel name to The Fabulous Flamingo on March 1, After Siegel's death, Moe Sedway and Gus Greenbaum , magnates of the nearby El Cortez Hotel , took possession of it.
Under their partnership, it became a non-exclusive facility affordable to almost anyone. They made the enterprise extremely successful.

The original entrance and signage was destroyed. A new entrance with an upswept roof was built and a pink neon sign was designed by Bill Clark of Ad-Art.

The Metropolitan suite is great. With all the Covid restrictions it was much easier for myself and friends to just smoke cigars and hang out in my room.
We gambled a lot. But the safety of us who all tested before we got to Vegas, to be able to have a relaxed safe environment was great. For it being one of the oldest hotels and casinos on the strip I was happy with it.
But you get way more bang for your buck at the Flamingo. Review collected in partnership with Caesars Entertainment. Date of stay: January Value. Sleep Quality.
